Oya, the orisha of the wind, is the daughter of Yemaya and wife of Shango. She is known to carry is lightning bolt (as depicted) and is the Bonnie to his Clyde. She was a fierce warrior that accompanied Shango as he threw lightning at men and houses, using her winds to start fires. 

 

This mixed media painting uses acrylic, pumice, hot glue, fabric and buffalo fur. The splatters of maroon are meant to evoke the movement of wind. Maroon/deep red is one of the colors attributed to Oya, as well as the buffalo (horns), and copper – which is found in the background.
